The 70’s saw the coming of decimalisation, which meant that the public could no longer ‘check their change’. The basic ‘Check your Change’ books were combined and re-launched as the ‘Collectors…’ range. New (some short lived) titles were also added. If you have a Rotographic title that isn’t on this list please let us know!

englandcoins1stedition_smallCollectors’ Coins: England (1st edition). Printed 1974

After Check your Change came this title “Collectors’ Coins: England” which was re-named later to “Collectors’ Coins Great Britain” (technically some argue that the coins of Great Britain are an English coinage. Wales has been ‘sort of’ under English rule for centuries and Scottish coinage was done away with after the act of Union). Format: 80 pages, paperback with greyscale pictures 15.2×10.8cm.

cce1975_smallCollectors’ Coins: England (2nd edition). Printed 1975

This one features the reverse of the first commemorative 50p. Format: 80 pages, paperback with greyscale pictures 15.2×10.8cm. SBN 901170 87 9.

englandcoins3rdedition_smallCollectors’ Coins: England (3rd edition). Printed 1976

A nice gothic Crown image on the front of this mid 70’s book. Format: 80 pages, paperback with greyscale pictures 15.2×10.8cm. SBN 901170 77 1.

englandcoins4thedition_smallCollectors’ Coins: England (4th edition). Printed 1977

And you thought the 1934 Crown image on the 2005 edition of Collectors’ Coins GB was original? So did I until late in 2005 when I tracked down a copy of a 1977 edition and managed to persuade its new owner, Mr F Hulett of Sterlingshire to part with it! Format: 80 pages, paperback with greyscale pictures 15.2×10.8cm.

englandcoins5thedition_smallCollectors’ Coins: England (5th edition). Printed 1978

A new style cover! This ‘Silver Jubilee edition’ would have been printed in late 1977 and throughout 1978. A cover variety exists with the date ‘1978’ printed in red. Format: 80 pages, paperback with greyscale pictures 15.2×10.8cm. SBN 901170 27 5

englandcoins6thedition_smallCollectors’ Coins: England (6th edition). Printed 1979

70’s Rotographic books tend to be very well used. This 1979 edition is in very good shape and 1979 must have been a good year as this edition is frequently available second hand. Format: 80 pages, paperback with greyscale pictures 15.2×10.8cm. SBN 901170 37 2.

irishcoins4thedition_smallCollectors’ Coins: Ireland (4th edition). Printed 1979

A stitched hard back book! This is the only older hard back Rotographic book I’ve ever seen (a couple of the current books are available as hard backs). This book started its life at Ballymena library in Co. Antrim, and has ex library stickers and stamps. Format: 50 pages, hardback with greyscale pictures 14.8×10.5cm. SBN 901170 19 4.

csi1979_smallCollectors’ Stamps of Ireland (1st edition). Printed 1979

No evidence has yet been seen that would suggest this book made it into a 2nd edition. Format: 78 pages, hardback with greyscale pictures 14.8×10.5cm. SBN 901170 14 3.
